We are delighted to report that this year 2024 the centenary of the restored "New Scale Side Car Combination" that took part in the Isle of Man 1924 Tourist Trophy Races which "New Scale Side Car Combination" rode by James Whitehead Taylor came 4th in the Senior Classification. (i.e. 350 c.c and above)
Imagine the delight of the Scale Family when fate marked the occasion when Mrs Beverly Burns visited us, travelling all the way from her home in Huddersfield.
Mrs Burns is the grand daughter of James Whitehead Taylor the rider that Henry John Scale supplied the motorcycle and sidecar enabling him to race that year along with a backup combination.
James who was a Mechanic aged 21at the time was riding the "New Scale" 350c.c.(with the Bradshaw T.T engine) Side Car Combination and was awarded the Replica Trophy, (as seen above) for the fastest lap with an average speed of 41:39 m.p.h.
We now know thanks to Mrs Burns that the restored "New Scale" motorbike and sidecar as seen on our website restoration section are in fact the backup combination that Henry John Scale sent over in case The New Scale rode by James W Taylor had any mechanical problems.
In fact both motorcycles turned out to be very reliable.
Seen above with Mark Scale the Great Grandson of Henry John Scale the founder of the New Scale Motor cycle company with Mrs Beverly Burns.
We are very grateful to Mrs Beverly Burns for the original trophy as shown above now united which the motorcycle her Grand Father rode 100 years ago, and the information we weren't aware regarding the race.
