An Exciting Meeting at the Stockport M. Cs Hill-climb

 

Axe Edge, near Buxton, the scene of Stockport Motor Club's first open climb, is a fine open stretch of roadway one-and -a quarter miles up with a 1-in 8 gradient, an is safe at any motorcycle speed.

Yet a club member, W. Bentley, in the 350 c.c. class, fell and was rushed off to the local hospital, and Brewin(8 h.p Zenith" burst a front tyre at speed in the 1000 c.c. class, croppered badly and broke his collar-bone.

Somewhat late in starting, the officials made up for lost time in getting the 60 or so competitors off smartly.

The first was Frank Whitworth, of Douglas fame along with W. Heaton (A.J.S.) , from whom some good riding was expected.

Unfortunately Whitworth stripped his timing wheels and as Heaton was  much faster than others of his class on time.

H. Scale (3½ h.p. Scale J.A.P) was another in a class by himself, also a triple winner.

The results were as follows:-

Class 1 (touring up to 350 c.c.): 1. W Heaton (A.J.S.) 1 MIN 17⅗ secs.;

2, J Collier (Douglas) 1min. 37 secs.

Class 2 (touring up to 600 c.c.): 1, R. M Davey (3½ hp. Norton) 1 min, 30 secs.; 2 S Phillips (3½ h.p. Triumph), 1 min. 55 secs.

 

Class 3 (racing up to 350 c.c.): 1 W. Heaton (2¾ h.p. A.J.S), 1 min. 26⅗ secs,; 2 H. Scale (2½ h.p. Veloce) 2 mins#. 33⅕ secs.

Class 4 (racing up to 500 c.c.) : 1, H.J. Scale (3½ h.p. Scale J.A.P.) 1 min 19⅗ secs.; 2 J Smith (3½ h.p. Triomph), 1 min. 25⅕ secs,; 3, R. Birkett (3½ h.p. Triumph), 1 min 26 secs.

Class 5 (racing up to 750 c.c.): 1 H. J Scale (3½ h.p. Scale- J.A.P.), 1 min 15⅕ secs. ; 2 R. Birkett (3½ h.p. Triumph), 1min. 21 secs

Class 6 (racing up to 1000 c.c.) 1 J. Cookson (8 h.p. Matchless), 1 min 10secs.; 2 H Marsden ( 8 h.p. Matchless) 1 min. 11⅕ secs.

Class 7 (T.T. up to 350 c.c.); 1 W Heaton (A.J.S.), 1 min 25 secs.; 2, E Woods (Levis), 1min 51 secs.

Class 8 ( T.T. up to 500 c.c.) : 1, H.Scale (3½ h.p. Scale- J.A.P.), 1min 15.; 2, W Heaton (A.J.S.), 1 min 22⅗ secs.; 3, R Birkett (3½ h.p. Triumph) 1min 23 secs.

Class 9 (passenger touring up to 1100 c.c.: walk-over, H Greenhalgh (8 h.p. Matchless) 2mins. 20 secs.

Class 10 (racing passenger up to 600 c.c. 1, H Bottoms (3½ h.p. Triumph), 1min 47⅓ secs.; 2, J Smith (3½ h.p. Triumph , 1 min 50⅗ secs.; 3 H. W Doughty (Bradbury), 2 min. 24 secs.

All classes run on time.
